Top-seeded Xavier team to beat in A-10 tournament

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey (Ticker) - Xavier hopes to begin its march to a fifth Atlantic 10 Conference tournament championship when it faces eighth-seeded Dayton on Thursday.

The 12th-ranked Musketeers, who last won the tournament title in 2006, dominated the conference during the regular season with a 14-2 record.

Xavier recently had its 11-game winning streak snapped, but rebounded with an 86-61 victory over Richmond in the regular-season finale on Saturday.

Six players average at least 9.9 points per game - with none scoring over 11.6 - for Xavier, which surprisingly did not have one player earn first-team all-conference honors.

The eighth-seeded Flyers have won four straight games after losing eight of their previous 11 contests.

Dayton outlasted Saint Louis, 63-62, in overtime on Wednesday. Marcus Johnson scored 16 points, including the go-ahead basket with 32 seconds left to play.

The Musketeers swept the season series with the Flyers and have won the last five meetings overall, taking three games from Dayton last season.

The winner will face either Richmond and Saint Joseph's on Friday.
