Brigham Young enters Mountain West tournament on a roll

Mar 13, 2008 - 10:48 AM Colorado St (7-24) vs. No. 23 BYU (25-6) 3:00 pm EDT

LAS VEGAS (Ticker) - The regular-season champions for the second straight year, No. 23 Brigham Young hopes the success continues into the Mountain West Conference tournament.

The Cougars, who have not won the MWC tournament since 2001, face Colorado State in the quarterfinals on Thursday. A year ago, they lost in the championship game to UNLV.

This season, BYU set a school record for regular-season victories, winning its final four games and 13 of its last 14.

Trent Plaisted averages 15.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game and Lee Cummard is scoring at 15.8 per contest.

The Cougars swept the season series with Colorado State, which went winless (0-16) in conference play during the regular season.

But the ninth-seeded Rams snapped a 17-game losing streak with a 68-63 victory over Wyoming in the opening-round game on Wednesday.

Marcus Walker scored 22 points and Andre McFarland added 18 for Colorado State. Walker leads the team in scoring at 17.4 per contest.

The winner will move on to face either San Diego State or Air Force in the semifinals on Friday.
