Oregon begins Pac-10 tournament title defense

Mar 13, 2008 - 2:02 PM Oregon (18-12) at No. 21 Washington St (23-7) 9:00 pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) - Oregon claimed the Pac-10 tournament crown last season. It may need a repeat performance in order to make the NCAA Tournament this time around.

The Ducks begin their title defense on Thursday when they meet 21st-ranked Washington State at the Staples Center in the quarterfinals of the Pac-10 tournament.

Oregon, winners of three straight, also ended last season with three straight wins before tearing up the conference tournament on its way to securing the automatic bid for the "Big Dance". Sophomore guard Tajuan Porter scored 24 points in the latest triumph - a 78-69 win over Arizona.

This season the Ducks are significantly off the pace of the 2006-07 team, which ended the regular season with a record of 23-7, and may need another strong showing to be invited to the NCAA Tournament this year.

To do so, Oregon will need to avoid a season sweep at the hands of the Cougars, who have already defeated the Ducks twice this year after Washington State had dropped 13 straight in the series between the teams.

The Cougars have alternated wins and losses over the last four games, but defeated Washington for the seventh straight time in double overtime, 76-73, on Saturday. Senior guards Kyle Weaver and Derrick Low scored 20 and 16 points, respectively, in the win.
