Louisville looks to bounce back in Big East tourney

Mar 13, 2008 - 2:09 PM Pittsburgh (23-9) vs. No. 13 Louisville (24-7) 7:00 pm EDT

NEW YORK (Ticker) - After missing out on a chance to be the top seed in the Big East Conference tournament, No. 13 Louisville hopes to make a deep run as the second seed when they face Pittsburgh in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

The Cardinals had their nine-game winning streak snapped in Saturday's 55-52 defeat at Georgetown, which cost them the regular season crown.

Louisville's balanced attack features four players scoring in double figures, led by senior David Padgett's 11.7 points per game.

The Cardinals have not fared well in their first two seasons in the Big East tournament, going just 1-2, with both losses coming against Pittsburgh.

The Panthers, who have made it to the championship game six times in the last seven seasons, won their opening round game over Cincinnati, 70-64, on Wednesday. It was only the second time in the last seven years that Pittsburgh played in the opening round.

The seventh seed, Pittsburgh was led by Sam Young's 21 points in the win. The junior leads the team in scoring at 18.1 points per game.

The team that moves on will face the winner of Notre Dame and Marquette in the semifinals on Friday.
