Texas begins quest for first Big 12 tournament title

Mar 14, 2008 - 1:50 PM Oklahoma St (17-14) at No. 8 Texas (26-5) 12:30 pm EDT

AUSTIN, Texas (Ticker) - Texas has captured the Big 12 Conference regular season title before, but the Longhorns are still looking for their first conference tournament crown.

On Friday, No. 8 Texas hopes to begin its run to the finals when they face Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals.

The Longhorns are the top seed in the Big 12 for the second time in three seasons, but have never won the tournament in 11 tries. Texas has lost in the finals in each of the past two seasons.

D.J. Augustin has had an excellent sophomore season, averaging 19.8 points and 5.7 assists per game, while A.J. Abrams is scoring 16.2 points per game to help make up for the loss of Kevin Durant.

Texas has won the last four meetings with Oklahoma State, including a 62-57 victory on Sunday that clinched the share of the regular season crown.

The Cowboys won their opening round game, 76-72, over Texas Tech, which snapped a two-game skid.

Freshman James Anderson had 18 points and eight rebounds to lead Oklahoma State in the win, and he leads the team in scoring at 13.5 per game.

Whichever team moves on will face the winner of Oklahoma and Colorado in the semifinals on Saturday.
