BYU seeking payback vs. UNLV

LAS VEGAS (Ticker) - Despite owning a top-25 ranking and a likely berth to the NCAA Tournament, No. 23 Brigham Young till has to take care of some unfinished business.

BYU goes for its first Mountain West Conference title since 2001 on Saturday when it takes on Nevada-Las Vegas in the tournament championship game.

The Cougars (27-6) are making their second straight final appearence and fourth in the nine-year history of the tournament. Last season, the Cougars suffered a 78-70 loss to UNLV here in the title game.

Top-seeded BYU booked its place in the final by posting a 63-54 victory over fourth-seeded San Diego State in the semifinals on Friday. Lee Cummard scored 20 points and Trent Plaisted added 19 to lead the Cougars.

UNLV (25-7) advanced to its second straight final on Friday, forging a 61-55 victory over the No. 6 seed Utah. Wink Adams and Curtis Terry each scored 20 points as the Rebels over came 39 percent shooting from the field by forcing 10 turnovers.

With the win, the No. 2 seed UNLV is poised to become the first team in Mountain West history to win three conference titles.
