Brockman scores career-high 25; Washington freshmen impress

Nov 13, 2006 - 6:08 AM SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Brandon Roy has moved onto the NBA. But Jon Brockman is more than happy to inherit the title of big man on campus.

Brockman scored a career-high 25 points and Quincy Pondexter added 21 points as No. 16 Washington posted a 99-91 victory over Pepperdine in the opener of the Basketball Travelers Classic.

After averaging 9.0 points as a freshman last season, Brockman came out Sunday and made 11-of-16 shots in addition to matching his career high with 12 rebounds.

"Jon Brockman was out on the perimeter tonight for 20-plus minutes," Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said. "And he did a pretty good job with a double-double."

The Huskies also got big days from a pair of current freshmen. Pondexter made 9-of-13 shots and center Spencer Hawes, one of the nation's top players in his class, shot 4-of-6 en route to 12 points while adding seven assists, five rebounds and four blocks.

Justin Dentmon contributed 13 points for Washington, which held a 52-37 lead at halftime and never was really challenged thereafter. The Huskies shot nearly 54 percent (36-of-67) as a team and showed no early signs of missing Roy, an All-American guard who was a lottery pick in this year's NBA draft.

"I am also proud of our guys," said Romar, whose team will face Nicholls State on Monday. "We made some mistakes and we don't understand yet how they played into the game, but those are things that will come and those are things that we will learn. Our guys did a lot of good things tonight."

Jason Walberg scored 18 points, Marvin Lea 16 and Chase Griffin 15 for Pepperdine, which shot 44 percent (29-of-65) but made just 24-of-35 free throws and committed 23 turnovers.

The Waves also were outrebounded, 43-30, as they had fewer defensive rebounds (15) than the Huskies had on the offensive glass (17).

"Well they just have so much speed, and not only do they have speed, but are very athletic with their speed and they shoot the ball well and they rebound the heck out of it," Pepperdine coach Vance Walberg said.
