No. 17 Marquette hopes to improve from season opener

Nov 13, 2006 - 4:05 PM Idaho St (0-0) at No. 17 Marquette (1-0) 8:00 pm EST

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) - Marquette's season opener was less than inspiring. Tom Crean hopes his team does not make the same mistake twice.

The 17th-ranked Golden Eagles hope to improve from a poor outing this weekend when they take on Idaho State on Monday night in the CBE Classic.

Marquette trailed, 36-32, against Division II Hillsdalle College on Friday before rallying for a 76-66 triumph. Jerel McNeal scored 19 points and Dominic James added 13, four assists and four steals.

The Golden Eagles shot just 41 percent (27-of-65), made only 20-of-31 foul shots and also committed 16 turnovers.

Idaho State returns two starters from last season, including guard David Schroeder, who averaged 15.3 points, and guard Logan Kinghorn, who averaged 10.6 points.

The Bengals, who went 13-14 in 2005-06, will be meeting the Golden Eagles for the first time in school history.
