Marquette looks to advance in CBE Classic vs. Detroit

Nov 14, 2006 - 2:52 PM Detroit (1-0) vs. No. 17 at Marquette (2-0) 8:00 pm EST

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) - Marquette's defense needed to make things happen after its offense proved incapable of consistent shooting.

The 17th-ranked Golden Eagles try to improve their accuracy Tuesday as they attempt to reach the semifinals of the CBE Classic in Kansas City with a win over Detroit.

Following Friday's 10-point triumph over Hillsdale College, things looked difficult for Marquette before escaping with Monday's 59-56 overtime victory over Idaho State.

The Golden Eagles won despite shooting only 29 percent (19-of-65) from the floor and missing 15 free throws. Marquette forced 25 turnovers - which led to 24 points - and had a 41-33 rebounding advantage.

Dominic James scored 17 points, Jerel McNeal added 13 and Ousmane Barro grabbed 13 rebounds for Marquette, which overcame a 40-32 deficit in the second half.

After losing 11 of 13 road games in last season's 16-16 campaign, Detroit opened this season with an impressive second half in Monday's 57-50 win over Maine.

The Titans shot 55 percent (11-of-20) while limiting the Black Bears to 29 percent (8-of-27) in the final 20 minutes, while using a 21-6 run to take the lead for good.

Brandon Cotton made 9-of-15 shots to score 24 points and Ryvon Covile added 12 with a career-high 13 rebounds in his first regular-season game after missing last season because of knee surgery.
