No. 8 Georgetown looks for second straight win over Vanderbilt
Nov 15, 2006 - 5:26 PM No 8 Georgetown (1-0) at Vanderbilt (0-0) 9:00 pm ESTNASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) - After leading Georgetown to the Sweet 16 of last season's NCAA Tournament, Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert again are proving to be a dynamic duo for Georgetown.
The twosome try to lead the eighth-ranked Hoyas to a 2-0 start in their 100th season of basketball Wednesday when they visit Vanderbilt, which is playing its season opener.
The 2005 Big East Co-Rookie of the Year, Green led the team in scoring (11.9) and was second in rebounding (6.5) en route to his selection to the second team All-Big East squad last season.
Hibbert joined Green on the second team all-conference lineup after topping the Hoyas in rebounds (6.9) and finishing second in scoring (11.6). The two sparked Georgetown to a 23-10 mark.
Green scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Hibbert added 16 and six for the Hoyas, who had a 39-23 rebounding edge in Saturday's 69-59 victory over Hartford their the season opener.
Despite losing to Notre Dame in the NIT, Vanderbilt went 17-13 last season, including its first sweep of Kentucky since 1974. The Commodores also posted their initial victory at Rupp Arena in 29 tries, a 57-52 triumph on January 10.
Vanderbilt is led by junior guard Shan Foster, who averaged 15.9 points and was selected to the first team All-Southeastern Conference squad by the league's coaches. He has made nearly 43 percent of his his 3-pointers (159-of-372) in the past two seasons.
The Commodores have won their last 10 season openers overall and the last 11 at home. However, they suffered a 68-61 loss to Georgetown last November 26, which tied the all-time series, 1-1.
