Ohio State plays basketball, too; host Eastern Kentucky
Nov 17, 2006 - 3:25 PM Eastern Kentucky (2-0) at No. 4 Ohio St (3-0) 7:00 pm ESTCOLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) - The focus certainly isn't on basketball in Columbus these days, but Ron Lewis may have something to say about that.
One day before Ohio State plays the biggest game of the college football season, Lewis leads the fourth-ranked Buckeyes into their matchup with Eastern Kentucky on Friday night.
The top-ranked Buckeyes football team hosts arch-rival and No. 2 Michigan on Saturday afternoon at "The Horseshoe" in a game that effectively decides which one of the Big Ten Conference powers will earn a spot in the national championship game.
But Ohio State has a pretty good basketball team, too. Thad Matta's squad has won its first three games by an average of 24 points, with Lewis averaging 20.0 points and 6.3 rebounds along the way.
Lewis scored 18 points on Sunday as the Buckeyes posted an 81-59 victory over Kent State. Jamar Butler added 14 points and Othello Hunter chipped in 13 as Ohio State improved to 32-3 at Value City Arena under Matta, including a 19-0 record against non-conference opponents.
Eastern Kentucky beat East Tennessee State, 70-53, on Monday behind Mike Rose's career-high 27 points. He is averaging a team-high 18.5 points on the young season, while Michael Brock leads the Colonels with 9.5 rebounds per contest.
No one has shouted yet.
