Wyoming Cowboys Preview

For yet another talented Mountain West team, we have the Wyoming Cowboys. Jeff Linder has led the Cowboys to their first tournament appearance since 2015, and this team is much better than that squad.

The offense runs through Hunter Maldonado and Graham Ike, who form one of the best one-two punches in the nation. Maldonado has the 10th-best assist rate in the nation, and Ike is an effective rebounder who can kick it out to Drake Jeffries – a 40% sharpshooter who is on the floor more than 90% of the time for the Cowboys.

While those three players are incredibly talented, it scares me a bit just how much Wyoming runs through them. Ike’s 35.3% usage rate is the fifth highest for any player in college basketball. We’ve witnessed the Wyoming big man falter, leading to losses to teams such as UNLV and New Mexico. And Wyoming has very little depth, ranking 342nd in bench minutes.

Despite Wyoming’s height, any big team is going to give Wyoming problems – as witnessed in Arizona’s drubbing of them back in December. The Cowboys are well-rounded, but they aren’t exactly a difficult team to prepare for, as they don’t force many turnovers, and they show you what they’re going to do on offense before they do it. This team is capable of winning a few games, but any talented coach with an athletic team should be able to handle Wyoming.

Indiana Hoosiers Preview

Indiana saw that they were on the wrong side of the bubble before the Big Ten tournament began and decided to take matters into their own hands. If it weren’t for some seriously ridiculous shooting from Jordan Bohannon in the semifinals, we might be talking about the Hoosiers as an auto-bid.

What worried me most about this team all year was their ability to play 40 minutes. In a 74-57 loss to Illinois in early February, Illinois went on a 26-11 run in the final 10 minutes. Two games later, Michigan State went on a 22-12 run late in the game. Even Minnesota went on a 39-19 run late in a game in the end of February, making Indiana’s win way closer than it should have been.

Despite this, we saw some serious fight from these Hoosiers in the conference tournament, as they came back from a 60-43 deficit against Michigan. Trayce Jackson-Davis is the clear go-to guy, while Xavier Johnson spreads out defenses with his shooting ability.

If the Big Ten Tournament form shows up in March, Indiana can compete with anyone. Their aggression and interior defense can throw any team off its axis. But if the Indiana that struggled in February shows up, expect an early exit.

Rapid Prediction for Wyoming Cowboys vs. Indiana Hoosiers

This First Four game between a pair of No. 12 seeds is a fascinating matchup, as one of the sport’s “blue bloods,” Indiana, meets upstart Wyoming. The Cowboys’ 25 regular-season wins are the school’s most since 1952, while Mike Woodson increased Indiana’s win total from 12 to 20 in his first season at the helm. Wyoming is a difficult team to prepare for, as they often invert their offense, using 6-7 point guard Hunter Maldonado out of the post. The matchup between Wyoming big man Graham Ike and Indiana big man Trayce Jackson-Davis will go a long way in determining the winner. The Hoosiers built momentum in the Big Ten tournament, beating Michigan and Illinois on consecutive days. Meanwhile, Wyoming struggled down the stretch, going 4-4 in their last eight.
