Old Dominion ends Georgetown's streak at McDonough
Nov 20, 2006 - 1:47 AM WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Old Dominion made Georgetown's winning streak at McDonough Arena a thing of the past.Valdas Vasylius scored 16 points and Arnaud Dahi added 15 as the Monarchs rallied from a halftime deficit to upset the eighth-ranked Hoyas, 75-62, in a non-conference matchup.
This was Georgetown's first loss at McDonough Arena - its on-campus gym - since the 1982 season, snapping a 23-game winning streak here.
"This is pretty good stuff for us," Old Dominion coach Blaine Taylor said. "Being as they're ranked, and deservedly so, and being on the road and in this environment, it all kind of adds up to a pretty big win."
"We went into this game knowing it was going to be a significant game," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said. "We want some challenges in our schedule and we sure got one tonight."
It appeared the Hoyas would keep their streak intact after owning a 31-27 edge at the half and building that lead to 44-37 on a dunk by Roy Hibbert with 14 minutes to go.
However, Old Dominion used that slam as a motivating factor and scored the next 13 points to take a 50-44 lead a little over three minutes later. A 3-pointer and layup by Dahi capped the spurt as the Monarchs led the rest of the way.
Brandon Johnson had 14 points for Old Dominion, which made 9-of-16 3-pointers and shot 58 percent (14-of-24) in the second half.
"We weren't scared and knew we could play with them," Johnson said. "We knew if we played our game by hitting open shots and playing good defense, we could win. This is awesome."
Hibbert netted 17 points and Jessie Sapp added 16 for Georgetown, which shot 48 percent (23-of-48). Jeff Green, who entered the contest as the team's leading scorer at 18.0 points per game, finished with just two.
"He's (Green) such an integral part to what we do," Thompson said. "When he's off, more than likely we will be off. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out."
This was the first meeting between Georgetown and Old Dominion since the 1978-79 campaign. The Monarchs now own a 2-1 edge in the all-time series.
The Hoyas will play once more this season at McDonough, on December 16 against Winston Salem State.
