Tennessee takes on Butler in NIT Season Tip-off
Nov 22, 2006 - 3:36 PM Butler (4-0) at No. 21 Tennessee (4-0) 7:00 pm ESTNEW YORK (Ticker) - Tennessee hasn't faced Butler in nearly 50 years. But that doesn't mean Bruce Pearl and Todd Lickliter aren't familiar with each other.
The two coaches renew their acquaintance Wednesday when the 21st-ranked Volunteers square off against the Bulldogs in the semifinals of the NIT Season Tip-off.
Pearl served as Wisconsin-Milwaukee coach for four years prior to taking over Tennessee's program before last season. In his time with the Panthers, he won six of the nine matchups against Lickliter's Bulldogs.
Both teams are off to a good start this season, especially the Volunteers, who have scored at least 78 points in each of their games and have forced 107 turnovers so far.
Tennessee is coming off a 99-65 romp against Coppin State on Sunday in which Chris Lofton scored 19 points and freshman Wayne Chism had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Butler edged Illinois-Springfield, 62-56, on Saturday as Drew Steicher scored 15 points off the bench and Brandon Crone added 12 points.
The Bulldogs won the only previous meeting between the teams - an 81-66 upset triumph on December 20, 1958.
No one has shouted yet.
