We’ve got a new series starting up here at Cardiac Hill! With a smaller group of writers, it can be tough to ensure all Pitt athletics get coverage. The solution? A weekly recap article that covers the happenings of all non-revenue sports in the past week. The plan is to release weekly on Monday, and I’ll stick to that schedule as much as possible.

With sports like women’s soccer and volleyball having historically great seasons, they deserve some of the love and media attention usually provided to traditional revenue sports. With this being the first installation in the series, feedback is always appreciated! We want to write what you want to read, so just let us know.

VOLLEYBALL:

Pitt’s highest-ranked team continued their dominance this past week. In two matches the seventh-ranked Panthers went undefeated, beating Boston College 3-1 in Chestnut Hill before taking down Syracuse 3-0 at home this past Friday. Dan Fisher’s squad currently sits at 25-2 on the year, 15-0 in conference play, and amid an 18-match winning streak. The next two matches will be season-defining, as Pitt travels to Louisville to attempt to complete a season sweep of the second-ranked Cardinals this Friday (Nov 18th). Following that the Panthers will take volleyball to the Pete, as a home matchup against top-ten opponent Georgia Tech is expected to break volleyball attendance records.

MEN’S SOCCER:

Pitt men’s soccer played once this week, falling in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament to Virginia, the 11th-ranked team in the nation. The season isn’t over yet though, as the Panthers were granted an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. They will host Cleveland State in the first round of the tournament this Thursday and should be the favorites in the matchup. The Panthers have been to the last two Elite Eights, but to continue that streak this year a fairytale run may be in order.

WOMEN’S SOCCER:

Pitt women’s soccer made history this past week, punching a ticket to their first-ever tournament appearance. The Panthers were seeded fourth in their regional and dispatched Buffalo 1-0 this past Saturday in the first round. A matchup with fifth-seeded Georgetown awaits, with the two squads facing off in Tallahassee, FL this Friday (Nov 18th).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:

Coach Lance White and the Panthers women’s basketball team kicked off the season with their first two games of the season this past week, winning both. A 56-41 win over Coppin State on Monday was followed by a 63-45 dismantling of George Mason on Saturday. Senior Guard and team captain Dayshanette Harris scored in double figures in both contests and will be a big part of the Panthers squad this season. Looking forward, the Panthers invite the Bryant Bulldogs to town before a city game against Duquesne this Saturday (Nov 19th) at 7:00 PM.

WRESTLING:

Also kicking off their season was Pitt wrestling, who walloped Cleveland State. The Panthers swept the match 36-0 with strong performances across the board. They’ll be in action this Friday (Nov 18th) against Maryland in hopes of continuing their strong start to the season.
