Duke eyes trip to Madison Square Garden

Nov 11, 2008 - 3:03 PM Georgia Southern (1-0) at No. 5 Duke (1-0), 9:00 pm EST

DURHAM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- No. 5 Duke will look to extend its home winning streak against non-conference opponents to 61 games when it hosts Georgia Southern in the second round of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer on Tuesday.

The winner will move on to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden to face the winner of the Carbondale Regional winner at Southern Illinois.

The Blue Devils were not as sharp as they hoped to be in their season opener but still had enough to rout Presbyterian, 80-49, on Monday.

It was Duke's 27th consecutive home-opening victory and 60th straight against non-conference opponents at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Kyle Singler had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Nolan Smith scored 15 for the Blue Devils, who forced 27 turnovers but also committed 21 themselves.

"We can't commit 21 turnovers going forward, and miss some of the shots that we missed tonight," said Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski, who guided the United States men's basketball team to a gold medal at the Summer Olympics. "Thank goodness it didn't have a negative impact."

Georgia Southern advanced with a 65-63 victory over Houston on Monday.

Trumaine Pearson had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles, who allowed one basket in the game's final 10 minutes.
