Georgetown overpowers Ball State

Nov 28, 2006 - 2:44 AM WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- John Thompson III put his team before his family.

Jeff Green scored 14 points to lead a balanced offense as No. 23 Georgetown rolled to an easy 69-54 victory over Ball State.

The game featured a matchup of coaching brothers, with Thompson facing his younger sibling Ronny Thompson. The sons of former Georgetown coach John Thompson are one of two sets of brothers coaching in Division I.

"This was hard," Thompson III said. "I mean, I knew this was going to be difficult and it was much more difficult than I had anticipated. That's my brother and I want him to have success. I want to watch their tapes in a manner in which to help them."

The Hoyas (4-1) were in control throughout, taking a 40-28 lead at halftime and never letting the Cardinals get the deficit under double digits thereafter.

Freshman DaJuan Summers scored 12 points and classmate Vernon Macklin added 10 for Georgetown, which shot 56 percent (25-of-46) from the field and hit 7-of-16 from 3-point range.

Ronny Thompson knew facing his brother made it impossible to treat the matchup like a typical game.

"It's different. And I think I would be lying to you if I said that it was just like playing another game," he said. "I wanted to beat him something terrible, to be very honest with you. And I think that my guys felt that."

The Hoyas set the tone early when Summers and 7-2 center Roy Hibbert each converted three-point plays to make it 14-4 roughly five minutes into the game.

Ball State got within 22-18 behind Peyton Stovall, who scored seven straight points for his team. However, Georgetown went on an 11-1 run that featured 3-pointers by Jessie Sapp and Summers, who had nine points in the first half.

"He has a knack for putting the ball in the basket, however, he didn't have any rebounds, so he's still getting acclimated to the adjustment," Thompson III said of Summers. "The adjustment from high school to college is tremendous. No matter how talented you are, it's a big jump."

The Hoyas broke open the game early in the second half when Mark Egerson scored five straight points during a 7-0 run that extended the lead to 53-34 with 12:50 left.

Roy Hibbert added nine points and eight rebounds and Sapp contributed eight assists for Georgetown.

"I thought he had more than eight assists, because he threw a lot of scoring passes, which he has a knack for doing," Thompson III said of Sapp. "He's slowly developing. ... He's playing significant key minutes that he didn't play last year."

Micah Rollin and Anthony Newell scored 10 points each for Ball State, which lost its fourth straight game.
