Texas opens season against Stetson

Nov 14, 2008 - 11:19 AM Stetson at No. 8 Texas, 8:00 p.m. EST

AUSTIN, Texas (Ticker) -- Another season and once again, Texas will have to replace its leading scorer.

The eighth-ranked Longhorns will look for someone to step up and fill the void when they open their campaign against Stetson on Friday.

Texas returns three starters from last season's squad that reached the regional finals, but lost point guard D.J. Augustin to the Charlotte Bobcats. The 5-11 guard averaged 19.2 points and 5.8 assists.

Losing their leading scorer is nothing new to the Longhorns, who had to replace Kevin Durant (25.8 ppg) last season and P.J. Tucker (16.1 ppg), who left after the 2005-06 campaign.

Senior guard A.J. Abrams and junior forward Damion James are the most likely candidates to carry the load. Each averaged in double figures last season, with Abrams scoring 16.5 points per game.

The Hatters of the Atlantic Sun Conference are coming off a 16-16 campaign.

Senior Garfield Smith returns after leading Stetson in scoring last season. He averaged 16.1 points per contest.
