Veteran Villanova squad opens season against Albany
Nov 14, 2008 - 11:15 AM Albany at No. 25 Villanova 8:00 p.m. ESTVILLANOVA, Pennsylvania (Ticker) -- While Big East powers Connecticut, Louisville, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame receive much of the preseason hype, head coach Jay Wright and 25th-ranked Villanova are flying a bit under the radar.
An experienced Wildcats squad with all five starters back for another season opens the 2008-09 campaign against Albany on Friday.
Wright returns his top seven scorers, led by junior guard Scottie Reynolds and his 15.9 points a game.
A pair of senior forwards in Dante Cunningham and Shane Clark provide a veteran presence in the front court for Villanova, which lost to eventual champion Kansas in the regional semifinals, 72-57.
In a loaded Big East, the Wildcats were selected fifth in the preseason poll after finishing with a 9-9 record in the league and 22-13 overall a year ago.
Albany posted a 15-15 mark overall and 10-6 in American East last season.
Brian Connelly is the Great Danes' leading returning scorer. The senior forward started all 30 games last season, averaging 10.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
