Kansas begins title defense against UMKC

Nov 16, 2008 - 7:04 AM UMKC (0-1) at No. 23 Kansas, 8:30 p.m. EST

LAWRENCE, Kansas (Ticker) -- A new class of players will try to begin Kansas' title defense off on the right foot when the 23rd-ranked Jayhawks host Missouri-Kansas City as part of the CBE Classic on Sunday.

The Jayhawks lost all five starters from last season's team that defeated Memphis, 75-68, in overtime of a dramatic national championship game.

Two key reserves return for Kansas, which is still expected to contend in the Big 12 Conference against the likes of Oklahoma and Texas.

Junior guard Sherron Collins and sophomore center Cole Aldrich will step into the starting lineup and Kansas is expecting an immediate impact from junior-college transfer Mario Little and freshman Tyshawn Taylor.

UMKC (0-1) of the Summit League lost its opener on Friday, 61-56, to North Dakota.

Reggie Hamilton scored 22 points to lead the Kangaroos, who shot 28 percent (17-of-61) from the field in the loss. UMKC went 11-21 last season.

Kansas has won all four of the schools' meetings. The Jayhawks posted an 85-62 victory over the Kangaroos last season.

The Jayhawks will raise the banner on Tuesday when they continue the CBE Classic against Florida Gulf Coast.
