Blair, Pittsburgh eye another fast start
Nov 17, 2008 - 2:51 PM Miami, Ohio (1-1) at No. 6 Pittsburgh (1-0), 7:00 p.m. ESTPITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Sixth-ranked Pittsburgh looks to go 2-0 when it hosts Miami, Ohio on Monday.
Fast starts are nothing new to the Panthers, who have not lost in the month of November since 1998. Pittsburgh has started 10-0 in each of the past five seasons.
Pittsburgh (1-0) won its 29th straight home game against a non-conference opponent Friday, posting an 86-63 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson.
Sophomore DeJuan Blair had 17 points and 13 rebounds and seniors Levance Fields and Sam Young each scored 15 points in the win. Fields also was playing on a bad left foot, which he re-injured in August after it caused him to miss 12 games last season.
The Panthers should not look past the RedHawks, who nearly upset No. 4 UCLA on Thursday.
Miami (1-1) trailed by one with under one minute to play before Darren Collison made a pair of free throws with 21 seconds left to push UCLA's lead to three. Kenny Hayes missed the game-tying 3-pointer with eight seconds to play and Josh Shipp made two foul shots to give the Bruins a 64-59 victory.
Michael Bramos leads the RedHawks in scoring at 17.5 points per game.
