Memphis hosts familiar foe in UMass

Nov 17, 2008 - 3:17 PM Massachusetts (1-1) at No. 12 Memphis, 12:00 am EST

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Memphis coach John Calipari will see a familiar face on the opposing sideline when the 12th-ranked Tigers host Massachusetts on Monday.

Derek Kellogg, an assistant under Calipari at Memphis for the past eight seasons, returns to the FedEx Forum as the coach for UMass. Kellogg played for Calipari for four seasons at UMass in the early 1990s.

The Tigers (1-0) posted a 90-63 victory over Fairfield on Saturday night.

Freshman Tyreke Evans scored 19 points and Shawn Taggart had 14 and 12 rebounds to lead Memphis, which shot 52 percent (29-of-56) from the field.

The Minutemen (1-1) averaged 81.5 points per contest last season and are putting up similar numbers this season.

UMass defeated Arkansas-Monticello, 90-71, in its season opener last Tuesday but lost at Southern Illinois, 80-73, in the second round of the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament on Wednesday.

Junior guard Ricky Harris leads four Minutemen averaging double figures at 23.0 points per game.
