Matthews, Marquette takes on Chicago State
Nov 17, 2008 - 3:26 PM Chicago State (1-0) at (17) Marquette (1-0), 8 pm ESTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- After a first half that was too close for comfort, Wesley Matthews and Marquette turned it on to cruise to a victory in the season opener.
The 17th-ranked Golden Eagles will look to put together a solid 40 minutes when they begin play in the Chicago Invitational against Chicago State on Monday.
Matthews scored a career-high 27 points and dished out eight assists as Marquette beat Houston Baptist, 95-64, on Friday.
The Golden Eagles led by only eight at halftime but scored the first 12 points of the second half en route to the easy win.
Lazar Hayward added 19 points and 12 rebounds for his third career double-double.
David Holston became Chicago State's all-time leading scorer in a season-opening win over Saint Xavier.
The senior had 32 points in the 112-83 victory, giving him 1,533 for his career.
