Florida attempts to overcome first loss of campaign

Nov 28, 2006 - 1:59 PM Southern (0-5) at No. 4 Florida (6-1) 7:00 pm EST

GAINESVILLE, Florida (Ticker) - With two streaks over, defending NCAA champion Florida tries to prolong another.

The fourth-ranked Gators look to rebound from their first loss of the season and win their 19th straight non-conference home game Tuesday in their first all-time meeting with Southern.

Florida failed to set a school record for longest victory streak with Saturday's 82-80 overtime defeat to Kansas. The loss ended the Gators' run at 17 straight games overall and 26 consecutive non-conference contests.

Taurean Green made 9-of-19 shots to score 25 points, Joakim Noah had 17 and Lee Humphrey 16 for Florida, which fell at the Las Vegas Invitational.

Florida has reached 90 points in four of its last five games and has hit nearly 56 percent (236-of-424) from the floor this season. The Gators are defeating their opponents by an average of nearly 35 points.

Southern is averaging just 50 points in its first five outings and has failed to reach 40 against Georgia and Wisconsin.

DeForest Riley-Smith scored 14 points and Douglas Scott added 13 for the Jaguars in Saturday's 66-52 loss to East Tennessee State at the South Padre Island Tournament.
