High-scoring Tennessee faces in-state foe

Nov 18, 2008 - 2:57 PM Tennessee-Martin (1-0) at No. 13 Tennessee (1-0), 7:00 p.m. EST

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- There may be new players and a deeper 3-point line, but Bruce Pearl had Tennessee flying up and down the court all the same in its season opener.

The 13th-ranked Volunteers look to make it two-for-two on Tuesday when they host Tennessee-Martin.

Tennessee averaged 24.3 shots from the arc last season - more than it did at the foul line - and advanced to the regional semifinals for the second straight year.

Pearl's team lost three starters, including former Southeastern Conference Player of the Year Chris Lofton, but the Volunteers cruised to a 114-75 victory over Tennessee-Chattanooga on Saturday.

Tyler Smith scored 21 points and freshman Cameron Tatum had 19 for the Volunteers, who went 11-of-29 from the arc.

Tennessee-Martin also loves to push the ball and trounced Maryville, 121-56, on Friday.

The Skyhawks are expected to contend in the Ohio Valley Conference this season, due in part to senior guard Lester Hudson.

Hudson was fourth in the nation in scoring last season and had 27 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and eight steals in Friday's victory.
