Balanced USC hosts New Mexico State

Nov 18, 2008 - 3:36 PM New Mexico State (1-0) at No. 20 USC (1-0), 9:00 pm EST

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- With the departure of star freshman O.J. Mayo, Southern California showed a more balanced attack in its season opener.

The 20th-ranked Trojans will go for their second straight win Tuesday when they host New Mexico State.

A 20-point scorer last season, Mayo departed for the NBA after one season with the Trojans, leaving a huge void in the offensive attack for the new campaign.

Dwight Lewis scored 18 points and Taj Gibson had 17 as the Trojans had four players in double figures en route to beating Mississippi Valley State in their opener, 78-55, on Saturday.

Freshman DeMar DeRozan added 14 for USC, which had lost three straight season openers.

New Mexico State, which is coming off a 21-14 campaign, won its opener, 79-52, over UC Riverside on Saturday.

Jahmar Young scored 18 points and freshman Troy Gillenwater added 17 for the Aggies (1-0), who shot 52 percent (29-of-56) in their victory.
