High-scoring Tennessee takes on intra-state foe

Nov 21, 2008 - 11:40 AM No. 13 Tennessee (2-0) at Middle Tennessee State (2-0), 8:00 p.m. EST

MURFREESBORO, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Inside or outside, Tennessee has scored early and often against a pair of intra-state foes to open the season. If history repeats itself, Tennessee should have equal success against a third team from the "Volunteer State."

No. 13 Tennessee goes for its third straight win against an intra-state school when it visits Middle Tennessee State on Friday.

The Volunteers (2-0) made 12 shots from the arc in a season-opening 114-75 victory over Tennessee-Chattanooga before scoring 66 points in the paint in Tuesday's 91-64 triumph against Tennessee-Martin. Tennessee was 2-of-17 from the 3-point line against Tennessee-Martin.

In a meeting between the teams last season, Tennessee tied a school record with 16 made 3-pointers in a 109-40 rout of Middle Tennessee State. The contest snapped the Blue Raiders' streak of 216 straight games without allowing 100 points.

Tyler Smith leads the Volunteers in scoring at 20.0 points per game.

Middle Tennessee State is off to its first 2-0 start since 2001. The team is coming off an 80-63 victory over Houston Baptist on Sunday.

Desmond Yates is scoring 19.5 points per game and Kevin Kanaskie is averaging 15.5 points and 10.0 assists to lead the Blue Raiders.
