UConn seeks better defensive effort vs. Miami

Nov 23, 2008 - 7:40 AM (2) Connecticut (3-0) at (17) Miami (2-0) 6:00 pm. EST

ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands (Ticker) -- Second-ranked Connecticut needs to tighten its defense or it runs the risk of being burned by Jack McClinton and No. 17 Miami in the semifinals of the Paradise Jam Classic on Sunday.

The Huskies needed all the offensive they could muster against a tough La Salle team in a 89-81 win on Friday. Freshman Kemba Walker scored a season-high 23 points and Jeff Adrien added 22 points and 14 rebounds.

Despite the big games from Walker and Adrien, UConn could not put the Explorers away because of a poor defensive showing.

The Huskies (3-0) allowed the Explorers to shot 50 percent from the floor - the highest mark since George Mason connected on half their field goals in their huge NCAA Tournament upset of Connecticut in 2006.

The Huskies will have their hands full with McClinton, a dynamic guard who averaged 17.7 points last season and is capable of taking over games. McClinton returned after missing the season opener with a high ankle sprain and scored 13 points in a 70-60 win over Southern Mississippi on Friday.

A former member of the Big East, Miami (2-0) has lost 15 of the 23 meetings between the teams. The Hurricanes went 6-7 against the Huskies while the schools were conference rivals from 1997-2004.

The winner of this game will face either No. 25 Wisconsin or San Diego on Monday.
