Notre Dame, Indiana resume rivalry in Hawaii

Nov 24, 2008 - 5:50 PM Indiana (2-0) at (8) Notre Dame 5:30 pm. EST

MAUI, Hawaii (Ticker) -- Eighth-ranked Notre Dame and Indiana meet in their first regular-season game outside of the Hoosier State on Monday in the opening round of the Maui Invitational.

The only three times the teams have played outside the state were in the 1953 NCAA tournament in Chicago, 1954 in Iowa City, Iowa and 1958 in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Fighting Irish (2-0) have been on the wrong side of this rivalry for quite some time, having lost 16 of the last 19 meetings. The two teams have not met since a 55-45 Notre Dame triumph on December 8, 2004.

The Irish trail the all-time series, 47-20, but are clearly the stronger team this season. Reigning Big East Player of the Year Luke Harangody - one of four returning starters - scored 27 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in a 65-54 win over Loyola Marymount on Friday.

On the flip side, the tradition-rich Indiana program is trying to pick up the pieces following the Kelvin Sampson phone scandal that led to a mass exodus. Several key players transferred and the Hoosiers (2-0) have begun the season with just nine scholarship players.

Freshman Tom Pritchard had 19 points and eight rebounds in a 60-57 win over IUPUI last Tuesday.

The winner of this game will face Texas or St. Joseph's in the semifinals on Tuesday.
