Kansas uses early run to blow out Coppin State
Nov 29, 2008 - 4:32 AM LAWRENCE, Kansas (Ticker) -- A pair of career games helped Kansas quickly put its first loss behind them.Cole Aldrich and Brady Morningstar each had career highs with 23 and 21 points, respectively, as No. 23 Kansas crushed Coppin State, 85-53, on Friday.
Sherron Collins added 11 points and eight assists for the Jayhawks (4-1), who were coming off their first loss, an 89-81 overtime setback to Syracuse on Tuesday.
After Coppin State scored the first basket of the game, Kansas reeled off 16 straight points - eight from freshman Tyshawn Taylor - to take control of the game.
"I thought we played well the first 10 to 15 minutes of the game," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "We were terrific defensively, we dominated the glass and we made shots. I told Sherron (Collins) I wanted him to focus on getting his teammates shots and he did. It was a good win."
Morningstar drilled three 3-pointers as the Jayhawks extended the bulge to 27-4 with 11:03 left in the half.
"It's just another game," Morningstar said. "I was fortunate to hit some shots and my teammates got me the ball. I shot the ball well."
The Eagles missed 14 consecutive shots at one point during the first half and finished the opening 20 minutes at 22 percent (6-of-27) as they trailed, 41-17, at the break.
Kansas, which held a 30-12 rebounding edge in the first half, led by at least 17 points the rest of the way as it coasted to the finish.
"In the second half we came out and played like I think we are capable of playing," Coppin State coach Fang Mitchell said. "In the first half, I just thought we were so intimidated by the crowd and noise. We aren't used to that, especially this early in the season. Regardless of what the score ends up we just have to play hard and execute better."
Aldrich shot 8-of-11 from the floor and added 11 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Morningstar made 6-of-8 shots from the arc.
Taylor also finished in double figures with 10 points and handed out six assists for the Jayhawks, who shot 53 percent (29-of-55) from the field.
It was Kansas' 26th consecutive home win.
Tywain McKee scored 17 points to lead the Eagles (1-2).
