Tennessee looks to get Pearl milestone victory

Dec 3, 2008 - 12:51 PM North Carolina-Asheville (3-3) at No. 13 Tennessee (5-1) 7:00 p.m. EST

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Bruce Pearl's first attempt at career win No. 400 came up short against one of the nation's elite teams.

The coach should not have as much trouble in the second try at the milestone when his 13th-ranked Volunteers face North Carolina-Asheville on Wednesday.

After an impressive win over then-No. 16 Georgetown in the semifinals of the Old Spice Classic championship, Pearl was denied his 400th win as Tennessee dropped an 83-74 decision to No. 5 Gonzaga.

Preseason SEC Player of the Year Tyler Smith made just 6-of-16 from the field for 17 points and Tennessee committed 21 turnovers in the setback.

The Volunteers held a 46-23 advantage on the glass, but allowed Gonzaga to shoot 52 percent (27-of-52) while knocking down just 36 percent (27-76) from the field themselves.

NC-Asheville is seeing its first action since a 116-48 loss to No. 1 North Carolina on Sunday.

Reid Augst, Jason Ridenhour and Matt Dickey had eight points each for the Bulldogs, who went 18-of-68 (26.5 percent) from the field and committed 25 turnovers.

NC-Asheville has lost three straight road contests after opening the season with three consecutive home wins.
