Kansas continues homestand against New Mexico State

Dec 3, 2008 - 1:01 PM New Mexico State (2-2) at No. 25 Kansas (5-1) 8:00 p.m. EST

LAWRENCE, Kansas (Ticker) -- A long homestand is helping Kansas forget about its first loss.

The 25th-ranked Jayhawks go for their third straight win when they host New Mexico State on Wednesday.

The defending national champions, Kansas opened the season with a trio of lopsided wins before dropping an 89-81 decision to then-unranked Syracuse in the final of the CBE Classic at Kansas City on November 25.

The Jayhawks returned to Allen Fieldhouse following the setback and opened a six-game homestand with a 32-point drubbing of Coppin State before cruising past Kent State, 87-60, on Monday.

The pair of victories stretched Kansas' home win streak to 28 games - the fourth longest in the country.

Sherron Collins scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half and the Jayhawks made 32-of-36 free throws en route to the decisive win over Kent State.

Collins is averaging a team-high 18.3 points per game and has led Kansas in scoring in all but one game this season.

The junior guard should have little trouble continuing that trend against New Mexico State, which allowed a season-high 77 points during a five-point loss to Long Beach State on Sunday.

Jahmar Young, the Aggies' leading scorer, had 17 points and Wendell McKines contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds against Long Beach State.
