Back in Top 25, Marquette hosts IPFW

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- An impressive victory helped Marquette return to the Top 25.

The 24th-ranked Golden Eagles try to justify their ranking on Saturday when they host IPFW.

After starting the season ranked 17th and ascending to No. 15 following a five-game win streak, Marquette was dropped from the Top 25 when it suffered an 89-75 setback against Dayton on November 29 in the title game of the Chicago Invitational Challenge.

The Golden Eagles bounced back with a 14-point win against Central Michigan and evidently impressed pollsters when they outlasted 22nd-ranked Wisconsin, 61-58, on Monday.

Jerel McNeal scored a season-high 26 points and Dominic James added 10 for Marquette, which defeated the Badgers for the second straight year in the 115th all-time meeting between the schools.

The Golden Eagles have to avoid looking ahead to a meeting with current No. 8 Tennessee on December 16 when they face IPFW, which snapped a three-game losing streak with a 63-46 triumph over Valparaiso on Wednesday.

Leading scorer David Carson had 16 points and nine rebounds and Deilvez Yearby and Nick Daniels each contributed 13 as the Mastodons claimed the victory in the third contest of a season-high, seven-game road trip.
