Duke looks to bounce back from dismal upset

Dec 17, 2008 - 11:17 AM UNC Asheville (4-5) at No. 6 Duke (8-1) 7:30 p.m. EST

DURHAM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- A long layoff will not help Duke forget its last game.

The sixth-ranked Blue Devils try to bounce back from their first loss on Wednesday when they host North Carolina-Asheville.

Despite 16 points from Jon Scheyer and 15 from Kyle Singler, Duke suffered an 81-73 upset against Michigan on December 6, snapping a campaign season-opening, eight-game win streak.

The Blue Devils, who had claimed a 15-point victory against Michigan during the championship game of the 2K Sports Classic 15 days earlier, managed six free-throw attempts (4-of-6) and hit only 7-of-33 shots from beyond the arc.

Duke had won 31 straight games against unranked, non-conference opponents dating to a loss against Georgetown on January 21, 2006.

The Blue Devils should have no problem getting back on track against UNC Asheville, which snapped a five-game losing streak with an 84-67 romp against Division II Catawba on Saturday.

Leading scorer Reid Augst poured in 20 points to pace the Bulldogs, who have not beaten a Division I opponent since forging an 84-56 drubbing against Liberty on November 18.
