After setting record, Hansbrough, UNC face Valparaiso

Dec 20, 2008 - 2:32 PM No. 1 North Carolina (10-0) vs. Valparaiso (3-6) 2:00 p.m. EST

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- After becoming the leading scorer in North Carolina history, Tyler Hansbrough is ready to move on.

Hansbrough and the top-ranked Tar Heels look to remain undefeated when they face slumping Valparaiso at the United Center on Saturday.

The reigning consensus National Player of the Year, Hansbrough needed nine points during Thursday's contest against Evansville to pass Phil Ford, who totaled 2,290 from 1974-78.

The senior forward scored the Tar Heels' first six points to open the contest and tied Ford with a jumper from the left wing with 14:04 left in the first half.

After resting on the bench for a few minutes, Hansbrough moved into first place with a turnaround shot in the lane with 7:45 remaining in the half.

"I was happy it was over with," Hansbrough said. "I didn't really think about it much before until a couple games ago when someone mentioned it to me. I hadn't really been keeping up with it until everybody started talking about it. I was just tried to get it over with so we could move on."

Hansbrough finished with 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor, registering his 61st career 20-point game as the Tar Heels claimed a 91-73 victory over Evansville. He now has 2,302 points in his career.

Valparaiso opened the season with back-to-back wins, but have since lost six of seven games, including a 62-50 setback to Miami, Ohio last Saturday.
