UConn, Gonzaga clash in early-season showdown

Dec 20, 2008 - 3:24 PM No. 2 Connecticut (9-0) vs. No. 7 Gonzaga (8-1), 4:00 p.m. EST

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Two of college basketball's premier teams clash on Saturday when second-ranked Connecticut takes on No. 7 Gonzaga at Key Arena.

The Huskies have cruised through most of their early season schedule, winning by an average of 23 points. UConn is coming off a 91-57 triumph against Stony Brook on Monday.

Gonzaga started fast before losing at Arizona last Sunday. The Bulldogs bounced back with an 84-42 drubbing of Texas Southern on Thursday.

The Bulldogs made 11-of-17 3-pointers in their win over Texas Southern after connecting on just 6-of-20 against Arizona.

Both teams boast balanced attacks, but Connecticut could have an advantage in the size of its front court.

Junior 7-3 center Hasheem Thabeet is averaging 14.9 points and 12.2 rebounds and bruising 6-7 forward Jeff Adrien is averaging 14.4 and 9.2. Jerome Dyson leads the club at 15.4 points per game.

Josh Heytvelt leads the Bulldogs in scoring at 15.7 points per game and Austin Daye is second at 13 points per contest.

Gonzaga posted an 85-82 victory over Connecticut in Boston last season.
