Raivio, Heytvelt lead Gonzaga past Portland State
Dec 1, 2006 - 3:47 AM SPOKANE, Washington (Ticker) -- Gonzaga's 3-point shooting made all the difference against Portland State.Derek Raivio scored 20 points and Josh Heytvelt added 17 and 10 rebounds to lead the 21st-ranked Bulldogs to a convincing 69-51 victory over the Vikings.
Despite shooting just 42 percent (21-of-50) from the field, Gonzaga (7-1) was lights out from behind the arc, making 9-of-16 attempts. By comparison, Portland State (4-3) shot just 5-of-29 from 3-point range.
The Vikings played tough midway through the first half, but the Bulldogs pulled away late to take a 37-29 halftime lead.
"I thought Portland State did a nice job," Bulldogs coach Mark Few said. "They came out and played more agressive than us. They outplayed us on the defensive end, stretched us out and forced us to play man-on-man a bit. They basically outplayed us on the floor and they deserve a lot of credit."
Portland State closed to 55-48 on a 3-pointer by Dupree Lucas, but Gonzaga closed the contest on a 14-3 run to put the game out of reach.
"We got stops and were able to rebound the ball," Few said. "We got most of our opportunities off of the break, which is how we like to play, but they played the game off the glass and generated opportunities to get more offensive rebounds."
Lucas scored 13 points to lead the Vikings, who had four starters in double figures.
With the win the Bulldogs increased the nation's longest home winning streak to 44 games.
