Minnesota looks to extend perfect start vs. High Point

Dec 28, 2008 - 6:09 AM High Point (4-7) at No. 23 Minnesota (11-0) 7:00 p.m. EST

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Tubby Smith leads Minnesota against his alma mater, High Point, Sunday in a final tuneup before opening its Big Ten schedule.

The 23rd-ranked Gophers are off to the program's best start since 1976-77, a season that saw them also start 11-0. Minnesota moved into the rankings this week for the first time since December 2002 and celebrated an 80-71 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday.

Blake Hoffarber and Lawrence Westbrook both scored 15 points in the win, which came three days after an impressive victory over then-No. 9 Louisville.

After its matchup with the Panthers, Minnesota hosts a pair of ranked conference foes, Michigan State and Ohio State, as it attempts to roll its perfect start into Big Ten play.

Smith is 3-0 all-time against his alma mater.

High Point has lost three of its last four, including a 3-point loss to Youngstown State on December 19. Nick Barbour led the Panthers with 21 points.

Eugene Harris, who leads High Point with 13.5 points per game, was limited to just eight points on 3-of-11 shooting.
