Syracuse opens Big East play against Seton Hall

Dec 30, 2008 - 2:16 PM Seton Hall (9-3) at No. 11 Syracuse (12-1), 7:00 p.m. EST

SYRACUSE, New York (Ticker) -- Syracuse will try and start Big East Conference play off on the right foot when it hosts Seton Hall on Tuesday.

The 11th-ranked Orange have missed the NCAA Tournament each of the past two seasons, but have gotten off to a great start in their non-conference schedule.

Andy Rautins made nine 3-pointers and scored 29 points in place of the suspended Eric Devendorf as the Orange defeated Coppin State, 82-71, on December 22.

Devendorf, who is averaging 13.9 points, could return on Tuesday. Jonny Flynn leads the team in scoring at 17.5 per contest.

Syracuse is averaging 81.2 points this season and the club will need its offense to be at its best in the Big East, which features eight teams in the Top 25.

The Pirates are not one of those ranked teams but Seton Hall does have wins against Southern California and Virginia Tech among others to its credit.

Jeremy Hazell scored a career-high 35 points as the Pirates snapped a two-game losing streak with a 101-70 victory against Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday. Hazell is currently second in the conference in scoring at 22.4 points per game.

Syracuse won the lone meeting last season, 85-73, at Seton Hall.
