Duke preps for ACC play

Dec 31, 2008 - 2:14 PM Loyola, Maryland (4-8) at No. 5 Duke (10-1) 4:00 p.m. EST

DURHAM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- After passing its latest test with flying colors, Duke has one more chance to fine-tune its game before opening Atlantic Coast Conference play.

The fifth-ranked Blue Devils host Loyola, Maryland Wednesday after an 11-day layoff, and will be looking to emulate their last performance.

A showdown with then-No. 7 Xavier turned into a massacre as Jon Scheyer led Duke to a 29-point halftime lead. The Blue Devils opened an 18-1 lead and did not allow the Musketeers their first field goal until 5:44 into the game.

Scheyer sank five 3-pointers en route to 23 points and Gerald Henderson added 19 as Duke captured an impressive 82-64 victory.

Kyle Singler is averaging 15.9 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists for the Blue Devils, who host Virginia Tech on January 4 to open their ACC schedule.

Loyola fell short of an upset bid against an ACC foe in their last contest. Marquis Sullivan scored 21 points and Jamal Barney had 20 for the Greyhounds, but North Carolina State escaped with a 62-60 win.

Barney leads the Greyhounds with 14.8 points per game and Brett Harvey is averaging 13.8 per contest.
