Hot-shooting Baylor hosts South Carolina

Jan 2, 2009 - 11:12 AM South Carolina (9-2) at No. 20 Baylor (12-1), 5:30 p.m. EST

WACO, Texas (Ticker) -- In its final tuneup before Big 12 Conference play, No. 20 Baylor hosts South Carolina on Friday.

The Bears are off to their best 13-game start since they were 12-1 during the 2000-01 campaign and appear to be primed to make their second straight NCAA Tournament.

Kevin Rogers scored 21 points and Henry Dugat had 20 as Baylor pounded Jackson State, 113-78, on Wednesday. The Bears shot 64 percent (44-of-69) from the field.

Curtis Jerrells scored a season-low seven in the win, but the senior is among five players averaging in double figures at 16.3 per game.

The Baylor senior guard will be tested in this one as he goes up against Devan Downey and South Carolina.

Downey is averaging 20.6 points per game and had 37 in the Gamecocks' 98-87 loss to Clemson on Tuesday. The setback snapped South Carolina's five-game winning streak.

Baylor plays its Big 12 opener on January 10 against Texas Tech, while South Carolina has one more non-conference contest before Southeastern Conference play begins.
