Unbeaten Pittsburgh clashes with Georgetown

Jan 3, 2009 - 1:06 PM (3) Pittsburgh (13-0) at (8) Georgetown (10-1) 12:00 p.m. EST

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Pittsburgh Panthers have had an easy road to 13-0. Things are about to get tougher.

The No. 3 Panthers will be looking for their second Big East win when they visit No. 8 Georgetown on Saturday.

Pittsburgh (13-0, 1-0 Big East) has yet to play a ranked opponent this season, building up its gaudy record against the likes of Akron, Fairleigh Dickinson and Maryland-Baltimore County.

The Panthers, however, opened their Big East slate on Wednesday at Rutgers and squeezed out a 78-72 victory.

It was the most points Pittsburgh had allowed all season and its smallest margin of victory. Sam Young netted 18 points and is leading the team at 19.9 points per game this season.

The Hoyas are likely to give the Panthers their first big test. Georgetown (10-1, 1-0) is coming off a 74-63 win at No. 2 Connecticut on Monday in which it jumped out to an 18-3 lead and never looked back.

Since suffering their lone loss of the season against Tennessee on November 28, the Hoyas have won seven straight. Doing it with a suffocating defense, Georgetown has yielded an average of 52 points per game during its winning streak.

Junior forward DaJuan Summers leads the offensive attack for the Hoyas, averaging 14.6 points per game while sophomore guards Austin Freeman and Chris Wright are pouring in 13.6 and 13.5 points, respectively.

The teams last met in the final of the 2008 Big East Tournament, with Pittsburgh taking a 74-65 decision at Madison Square Garden.

Young scored 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting while Summers countered with nine points on a senior-dominated Georgetown team that included Roy Hibbert and Jonathan Wallace.
