Notre Dame looks to stay perfect in Big East play

Jan 3, 2009 - 3:41 PM (10) Notre Dame (10-2) at St. John's (9-4) 2:00 p.m. EST

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- There is a crowd at the top of the Big East, and Notre Dame is part of the group.

The No. 10 Fighting Irish will look to stay near the top of the heap when they visit St. John's on Saturday.

Notre Dame (10-2, 1-0 Big East) is one of four Big East teams in the Top 10 in the nation and one of the conference's eight representatives in the Top 25.

The Fighting Irish are riding a four-game winning streak and took their conference opener, 92-82 at DePaul on Wednesday. Luke Harangody scored 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting and pulled down 16 rebounds in the win to notch his seventh double-double of the season.

Harangody is one of the favorites for Big East Player of the Year and could be in the running for National Player of the Year honors as well. The junior forward is averaging 23 points and 11.4 rebounds per game.

St. John's (9-4, 0-1) is on the other end of the Big East spectrum, trying to stay out of the basement in the conference.

Things did not get off to the best start for the Red Storm in their opener on Wednesday when they suffered a 75-54 loss to Providence - their third loss in a row overall.
