Marquette aims to stay unbeaten in Big East

Jan 7, 2009 - 11:33 AM No. 15 Marquette (13-2) at Rutgers (9-6), 7:30 p.m. EST

PISCATAWAY, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Off to its first 2-0 start in the Big East Conference, Marquette will try and extend its run when it visits Rutgers on Wednesday.

Since joining the conference in 2005, the Golden Eagles (13-2, 2-0 Big East) never had won their first two league games until this season as they posted victories over West Virginia and Cincinnati.

Marquette rolled past Cincinnati on Sunday, 84-50, for its fifth straight triumph overall.

Jerel McNeal made all seven of his 3-point attempts en route to 26 points in the win for the Golden Eagles, who were 15-of-25 from the arc as a team.

McNeal is averaging 18.1 points and Wesley Matthews is scoring 19.1 per game to lead Marquette.

After its previous three games, Rutgers (9-6, 0-2) is not getting much of a break as it looks for its first conference win of the campaign.

The Scarlet Knights are coming off consecutive losses to North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Connecticut - all three of which were ranked in the top three in the country at the time.

Freshman Mike Rosario is averaging 17.3 points to lead Rutgers, which was blown out at Connecticut, 80-49, on Saturday.
