Xavier opens conference play against Saint Louis

Jan 8, 2009 - 11:29 AM Saint Louis (9-5) at No. 18 Xavier (11-2), 8:00 p.m. EST

CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Xavier will try and get its Atlantic-10 Conference title defense started on the right foot when it hosts Saint Louis on Thursday.

The 18th-ranked Musketeers have won at least a share of the regular-season title each of the past two seasons and are expected to contend for a third.

Following its first two losses of the season, Xavier has rebounded with a pair of wins, including Saturday's 84-70 triumph at Virginia.

Derrick Brown is averaging 13.7 points per game to lead the Musketeers. B.J. Raymond had 24 in Saturday's win and is second on the team at 12.3 per contest.

Saint Louis comes in riding a three-game winning streak and is coming off a 60-52 victory over North Carolina A&T last Friday.

Tommie Liddell scored 17 points in the win and is averaging 14.1 points for the Billikens, who lost the only meeting with the Musketeers last season, 70-68, on Brown's putback with one-tenth of a second to play.
