Iowa tries to stay undefeated at home vs. Minnesota

Jan 8, 2009 - 11:29 AM No. 19 Minnesota (13-1) at Iowa (11-4) 7:00 p.m. EST

IOWA CITY, Iowa (Ticker) -- Minnesota may own its highest ranking of the season, but Iowa knows how to defend its home court.

The 19th-ranked Golden Gophers aim for their second straight win when they visit the Hawkeyes on Thursday.

Minnesota (13-1, 1-1 Big Ten) dropped its Big Ten Conference opener, 70-58, against then-No. 15 Michigan State on December 31. The Gophers bounced back with a 68-59 triumph over then-No. 23 Ohio State on Saturday, impressing the voters enough to jump two spots in the rankings.

Lawrence Westbrook, the team's leading scorer, poured in 15 points to pace Minnesota, which made 8-of-20 (40 percent) 3-pointers but shot only 42 percent (25-of-59) from the floor.

The Gophers will need a better performance to get past Iowa (11-4, 1-1), which is 9-0 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena this season and has won 10 of its last 13 home games against ranked opponents there.

Cyrus Tate scored a season-high 22 points and added 11 rebounds as the Hawkeyes escaped with a 65-60 victory over Indiana on Saturday.
