Duke returns to ACC play against Florida State

Jan 10, 2009 - 11:38 AM No. 2 Duke (13-1) at Florida State (13-2) 2:00 p.m. EST

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Ticker) -- After a decisive non-conference victory against one of the nation's best players, second-ranked Duke returns to Atlantic Coast Conference play on Saturday when it hosts Florida State.

Duke's smothering defense early in Wednesday's contest was too much for Stephen Curry and Davidson to overcome as the Blue Devils (13-2, 1-0 ACC) earned a 79-67 victory.

Jon Scheyer and Kyle Singler each scored 22 points for Duke, which jumped out to a big lead and held off an attempted rally by the Wildcats.

Curry, the nation's leading scorer who is averaging 29.2 points per game, finished with 29 points, eight rebounds and six assists. The Blue Devils allowed just one other player to reach double digits and limited Davidson to 4-of-17 shooting from the arc en route to their fifth straight win.

"We didn't want to try to take (Curry) away completely," Scheyer said. "Obviously, we wanted to focus on him and try to make him work for everything that he was going to do, but we also didn't want the other guys to get off."

Duke will aim for another lock-down performance against the Seminoles (13-2, 0-0), who will be playing their ACC opener.

After suffering an eight-point loss to then-No. 3 Pittsburgh on December 21, Florida State has bounced back with consecutive wins against Western Kentucky and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
