Baylor opens Big 12 play, hosts Texas Tech

Jan 10, 2009 - 11:35 AM Texas Tech (10-5) at No. 23 Baylor (12-2) 1:45 p.m. EST

WACO, Texas (Ticker) -- With its non-conference schedule complete, 23rd-ranked Baylor hosts Texas Tech Saturday in what should be a high-scoring Big 12 opener.

The Bears ended their non-conference slate with a dud last Friday, dropping a home tilt to South Carolina, 85-84, snapping their six-game winning streak.

A jumper with 5.1 seconds left lifted the Gamecocks to the victory despite 22 points and 10 assists from Curtis Jerrells, who leads the team averaging 16.7 points a game.

Kevin Rogers also posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds but LaceDarius Dunn, who ranks second on the Bears scoring 15.9 per contest, was limited to nine points while battling foul trouble.

Baylor, which ranks ninth in Division I with 83.5 points scored a game, has five players ranking in double figures. Texas Tech ranks 10th with 83.2.

The Red Raiders have lost two of their last three, including an embarrassing 111-66 whipping by Stanford on December 28. The Red Raiders rebounded from that defeat to top Stephen F. Austin on New Year's Day, but dropped their last game against TCU, 85-80.

Alan Voskuil had 22 points while Mike Singletary had 22 and seven rebounds off the bench. John Roberson is averaging 14.9 points and 6.0 assists to lead Texas Tech in both categories.
