Pittsburgh looking to continue unbeaten run

Jan 11, 2009 - 2:30 PM St. John's (10-4) at No. 1 Pittsburgh (14-0), 12:00 p.m. EST

PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- In its first game as the top-ranked team in the nation, Pittsburgh aims to stay unbeaten when it hosts St. John's in a Big East Conference contest on Sunday.

The Panthers moved up two spots in last Monday's coaches' poll, taking the No. 1 spot for the first time in school history.

Pittsburgh is one of three unbeaten teams left in Division I. Fourth-ranked Wake Forest (13-0) and No. 11 Clemson (16-0) are the others.

The Panthers (14-0, 2-0 Big East) have not taken the court since a 70-54 victory at Georgetown on January 3.

DeJuan Blair continued his dominant campaign with 20 points and 17 rebounds in the win. The sophomore is averaging 14.2 points and 12.5 rebounds this season, while Sam Young is scoring 19.5 points per game to lead Pittsburgh.

St. John's (10-4, 1-1) has also been out of action since January 3 when it sprung a 71-65 victory over No. 13 Notre Dame, snapping a three-game losing streak.

D.J. Kennedy had 20 points and 10 rebounds in the win and is tied with Paris Horne for the team lead at 13 points per game.

Pittsburgh won the lone meeting last season, 81-57, at St. John's.
