Purdue hoping to avoid falling further in Big Ten

Jan 11, 2009 - 2:28 PM Wisconsin (12-3) at No. 14 Purdue (11-4), 1:30 p.m. EST

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana (Ticker) -- Purdue was supposed to be a contender in the Big Ten Conference this season. So far, things have not been going according to plan.

The 14th-ranked Boilermakers will try and avoid falling further in the conference standings when they host Wisconsin on Sunday.

After losing at home to Illinois, Purdue (11-4, 0-2 Big Ten) dropped a 67-62 contest at Penn State on Tuesday. The Boilermakers went scoreless for over eight minutes during a stretch in the second half as the Nittany Lions went on a 13-0 run to take a 64-55 lead with 2:59 to play.

Purdue was without Robbie Hummel and Chris Kramer due to injury, but may be getting Kramer back against Wisconsin.

However, coach Matt Painter told the Chicago Tribune on Friday he is not sure if Hummel will be ready to go with a back injury. The sophomore is averaging 13.8 points, a team-high 8.1 rebounds and is the team's best defender.

E'Twaun Moore scored 21 points in Tuesday's loss and is averaging 15 per game to lead the Boilermakers.

Wisconsin (12-3, 3-0) is off to another strong start in the conference and is coming off a 74-45 rout of Northwestern on Wednesday. Jason Bohannon led the way with 20 points in the win.

Marcus Landry is averaging 13.1 points to pace the Badgers, who have started each of the past two Big Ten seasons with at least six straight wins.

Purdue, which lost three regular-season games in the Big Ten all of last season, swept the two-game series with Wisconsin last season.
